Permission to Feel: a Five Minute Friday Writing Prompt
I’m joining today with the Five Minute Friday community of writers who write for 5 minutes about a one word prompt.
Today’s writing prompt: PERMISSION
Today, I’m giving myself permission to feel.
Just as David cried out to God in the cave as he hid from Saul, the king of Israel who was hell bent on killing him, I am choosing to let my heart cry out too.
I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.
I pour out before Him my complaint; before Him I tell my trouble.
Psalms 142:1-2
David’s outcries throughout the Psalms serve as a great testimony of the kind of relationship God seeks to have with us.
One that is raw, honest, real and transparent.
One that outpours not only the joyous moments and the biggest blessings, but the moments in life that are hard to face.
The moments in life that leave us weary and confused, winded and hurting.
God doesn’t just want our good days. He doesn’t only want the days when we wear our masks tightly on our faces and appear to the world that we have it all together.
He seeks something deeper from us than that.
God wants our whole hearts, and just as David cried out honestly and brokenly, God aches for us to pour out everything to Him.
I’m giving myself permission to feel the weight of my emotions today, because God grants me permission to bring them all to Him.
He smiles, arms tenderly reaching out, waiting to catch every tear, every frustration, every fear and every doubt.
And today, friend, I give you permission to feel.
I give you permission to pour out your heart to God and approach Him honestly and brokenly, just as David did.
Let’s be women of God who bravely approach our King with our whole selves, knowing full well that He will meet us just as we are and love us all the same.
xoxo,
Your words remind me of Psalm 62:8.
“Trust [confidently] in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
Psalms 62:8
Thank you for this encouragement. God wants us to be honest with him about our feelings. He is the God of all comfort, but we need to seek His comfort by being open with Him. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Oh my, I love the verse you shared! When we pour out our hearts, it draws us closer to Him. Thank you for sharing, friend! Have a great weekend!
This was just the encouragement I needed after a few hard days :). Thank you for reminding me I can be raw and honest with God and he loves me for it.
Aw, I’m so glad this encouraged you! Praying a blessing of peace over you today, friend!
Such a relief to have a God who gives us permission to feel. Deirdre FMF#1
Yes, amen to that! He sees all of who we are and loves us fully!
I love how the Psalms give us the permission to come to God as we are and be honest about our feelings! Visiting from FMF #3.
Me too, Lesley! It’s one of the many reasons why the Psalms is my favorite book of the Bible!
I’d feel the weight of my emotion,
pain and misery,
but I truly have no notion
of just where they might be.
They say I should be sad and broken;
cancer’s such an awful thing!
But my laughter is my token
of a heart that’s taken wing
to soar above life’s barren plain
to see past what they say is mine,
and know that one day I’ll remain
forever by the Lord Divine,
telling jokes and drinking beer,
with a head that’s ever-clear.
This is so beautifully honest. I am in awe of your outlook on life; so relaxed and content knowing that all of your days are held in the Creator’s hands. I’m honored you shared!!
So grateful that He does, indeed, meet us right where we are!! I enjoyed your post today….hope you are having a blessed week!!
